Communication with social media possesses powerful advantages and disadvantages for today’s organizations. The case study emphasizes the risks associated when communicating on social media, in particular the use of Twitter among college athletes. Social media has no geographical boundaries or predefined rules and regulations. Those who use social media are sharing their thoughts for the world to analyze instantly, with the inability to correct or edit ones thoughts after posting content. The risks of having the capability to speak one’s mind instantly to millions of people, poses a threat to those who are not consciously aware of who and how the message will be decoded.
College athletes tweeting racial or discriminatory statements caused athletic programs to monitor, and some cases, ban college athletes from using social media. Some say banning the use of social media is a violation of the First Amendment rights, and limits the value it provides as a recruiting and marketing tool. I agree that banning or regulating social media will have long-term consequences to the morale of the college athletes as well as the public image of the organization.
