What is alcoholism?
Alcoholism is an addiction to alcohol that forms through a build-up of tolerance and resulting dependence on alcohol; and alcoholism is a disease. The disease o alcoholism constitutes a range of changes that have taken place in the Brain which impacts the entire central nervous system. The central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord. The spinal cord hosts the peripheral nervous system that uses nerve fibers to send messages to the rest of the body. Bodily processes such as movement, brain function, and the workings of internal organs can all be effected by alcoholism.

In 1819, Dr. C. W. Hufeland used the term “dipsomania” to describe the urges and cravings for alcohol. It wasn’t until 1849 that the actual definition of alcoholism was first offered.
