Career Field & Occupation Choice Within society, there are many occupations to explore and chose. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) results showed that my personal career strengths fall under the area of teaching and counseling. Currently, as a school counselor for a high school in Duncanville, Texas, a suburb outside of Dallas, I find the results of the assessment to be very accurate. Making the decision to become a counselor is a rewarding and exciting career choice. A typical day consist of seeing students during office hours times in the morning, help with lunch duty, and then classroom visitation. During classroom visitation, students have the opportunity to participate in group activity discussions, such as the JUST SAY NO Program, Tell Someone Program, Drug prevention programs, and so forth.
Preparation and qualifications Counselors within the Duncanville School District (DISD) are close in range to the salary of an educator’s of about 50,000 a year (Salary.com, 2012, p.5). A typical work week consists of 40 to 50 hours a week, but these hours do not include training and workshops. According to the United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS), a high school counselor has to have an undergraduate education that consists of programs in the area of psychology or another related major. Additional studies could be in the areas of adolescent and childhood psychology, life span development, and educational psychology. Often times, there is an internship or practicum, which helps with their work experience. At the graduate level, a high school counsel may place more emphasis on assessments that will allow for their licensing. The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs helps in the area of accreditation and may be asked to complete research projects as a part of their studies.
