Children At The Chinese Summer Camp Essay

For my paper I was fortunate enough to be granted permission to observe some children at the Chinese summer camp where I went when I was younger, the counselors let me sit in and watch them entertain and educate the children from the corner of the classroom. The room was quite small but was able to accommodate me, four adults, 27 kids with ages ranging from 5 to 7, 30 adult size chairs, and a large table in the center. I was able to take more than an hour worth of notes during my stay there which focused on how the children behaved, reacted, and developed using terms from Child development.

While the counselors were preparing for the day’s session cleaning the whiteboard, cleaning the table, and handing out papers the children were busying giggling and talking amongst themselves. One child in particular (who will be referred to as Stanley to protect his privacy) wasn’t socializing with the other kids; he was instead slumping with his arms over the back of the seat with his little legs dangling from the side. As the adults were trying to talk over the children signaling that the activity was starting Stanley stood up and tried to turn his swiveled seat to face them but the chair fell over and he landed on his stomach. One of the counselors picked the boy up and scowled at him as he cried, Stanley was removed from classroom as the adult who was escorting him lectured him on how his behavior was disruptive and not appropriate.
