Communication Opinion Paper

Communication is a huge part of every individual’s life. The delivery and receiving of communication will vary person to person. There are basic elements to communication and basic rules to health care communication that differ from each other. Providing and encouraging a consumer to communicate candidly, while also considering cultural differences should be completed in a delicate way. Communication entails both verbal and non-verbal communication, learning to use both effectively will ensure a positive communication experience.

When communication is defined by a process, people understand the effect being relayed. Meaning of communication can be interpreted through past, present, or future expectations. Personal goals differ from person to person. According to du Pre, 2005, researchers have found that participants approach health encounters with a range of goals and expectations. However, the main goal of most health care professionals is to maintain or restore the patients health, but providers also have others goals to be reached as well. “One measure of effective communication is how well participants feel their goals have been met” (du Pré, A., 2005). Knowing and understanding the patients personal goals will help increase the patient’s satisfaction. Communicators rely on each other making them interdependent. Being friendly and not only receptive, but also perceptive in health care encounters will encourage others to mimic the behavior seen. “Sensitivity enhances health communication on many levels” (du Pre, A., 2005). Being sensitive means being able to look and listen carefully to those talking, also being able to interpret cues given by other communicators. Actions within communication will vary with the intended meaning from person to person. Shared meaning will be common between friends, or people who understand the conversation at hand.
