Public health was defined as, what we, as a society, do collectively to assure the conditions in which people can be healthy and the mission of public health was to generate organized community effort to address the public interest in health by applying scientific and technical knowledge to prevent disease and promote health (Stanhope & Lancastor, 2008). The agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services carry out an extensive array of services, including research, public health, food, and drug safety, grants, and other funding, health insurance, and other services (HHS.gov, n.d.). The agencies conduct research, educate, and inspect to protect and promote health in the nation’s people. These agencies can also make recommendations based on Healthy People 2010 (Foundation, 2002). Each of the states and territories has a single recognized official state public health agency that is managed by a state health commissioner (State of FL, 2009).
Public health and community health difference
Public health nursing is a specialty and it is focused on population –focused and community oriented. The primary strategy is for health promotion, health maintenance, disease prevention primarily primary and secondary (Stanhope & Lancastor, 2008).
Public health is part of this nation’s strengths. What started as services for a few privileged sailors has evolved and responded to epidemics and natural disasters. Through public education, health promotion and disease prevention our people have the opportunity to take control of their own personal health.
