Drugs has become a rising issue in the United States leading individuals down the wrong path. Numerous individuals in today’s society are constantly looking for a high because they believe it is the “thing” to do. However, these same individuals do not understand what impact drugs have on the body or that drugs can turn one’s entire life upside down. Countless individuals are affected by drugs each day and about $193 billion is spent yearly on drugs in the United States alone (NH). According to David B. Merrill, MD, drug abuse can be defined as “ the recurrent use of illegal drugs, or the misuse of prescription or over-the-counter drugs with negative consequences” ( Merrill). Individuals abuse drugs by taking them when they are not needed if they are prescription drugs or by taking illegal drugs. Individuals abuse drugs because they enjoy the feeling they have when they are under the influence, so they take the drugs to create that feeling that they enjoy so much (Nora Volkow). Drug addiction differs from drug abuse because when one is addicted to a certain drug, they cannot control themselves when it comes to that drug unlike drug abuse which is voluntary. Drug addiction can be defined as “a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the addicted individual and to those around him or her” (NIH).
