Energy is an integral part of our lives and we use energy at home, work, and on the road every single day. We use biodiesel, electricity, ethanol, hydrogen, natural gas and propane. No matter where the energy is derived from, there are benefits and challenges to its use. No energy resource is perfect.
Biodiesel is a domestically produced, renewable fuel that can be manufactured from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant grease for use in diesel vehicles. Biodiesel 's physical properties are similar to those of petroleum diesel, but it is a cleaner-burning alternative. Electricity lights up our homes, cook our food, powers our computers, powers our television sets and other electronic devices. Electricity from batteries keeps our cars running and makes our flashlights shine in the dark. Electric energy can be either renewable or non-renewable, depending on the resource that creates it. Ethanol is a renewable fuel made from corn and other plant materials. The use of ethanol is widespread. Almost all gasoline in the U.S. contains some ethanol. It also produces less greenhouse gas emissions than conventional fuels. Hydrogen, when used in a fuel cell, is an emissions-free alternative fuel that can be produced from diverse domestic energy sources. Hydrogen can be produced domestically from fossil fuels, nuclear power, or renewable resources, such as hydropower.
