Genetically modified organisms have become a standard rather than an exception in America. Since their introduction in the 1990’s, genetically modified (GM) products have conquered agriculture in the United States and hold a large share of the food on American’s plates. (Dupont) Everyone has been exposed to it whether they know it or not. According to the US Department of agriculture by 2012, 88 percent of corn and 94 percent of soy grown in the United States were genetically modified. Some people believe that using this technology is harmful for human consumption, while others see the many advantages of using this technology, such as medicine to cure illnesses and gene therapy. Long term negative effects of human consumption of FMO food products are unknown. Much of the current debates on agricultural biotechnology have focused on the potential risks of GM crops for human health. Some of the health risks pertinent to unapproved genetically modified foods include antibiotic resistance, aller-genicity, nutritional changes and the formation of toxins (Behrokh & Ardekani, Jul-Sep)

The FDA regulates this technology, but does not approve the technology. According to the FDA, their role is to “regulate” foods and ingredients made from GE crops in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is responsible for protecting agriculture from pests and disease, including making sure that all new GE plant varieties pose no pest risk to other plants. EPA regulates pesticides, including those bioengineered into food crops, to make sure that pesticides are safe for human and animal consumption and do not pose unreasonable risks of harm to human health or the environment.
