Every person has heard of the term impressionism, but not everyone knows about impressionism and its important aspects. It gained its name in 1874, but the techniques used was used as early as the 1860s. What is impressionism, though? Impressionism is the idea that focuses around how light in nature falls onto surfaces. Many people say that impressionism is about the present. The use of various light sources help to show this. This art movement started in France, and included famous painters such as: Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, and Paul Cezanne. So what was the purpose of impressionism? What did it do? Impressionism changed the Western idea of landscape painting. It was changed from idealistic ideas of distant places to more accurate and vibrantly colored representations of already existing, quite often familiar, places and moments. Artists used their peers as subject matters when creating their artwork. They painted them in both work and play situations. This may seem like something of common practice in this day and age, but in the 1800s, this practice was a very controversial method to painting. The name Impressionism was coined by a critic named Louis Leroy. This happened after the first impressionist exhibition. He used this term because of Monet 's piece Impression: Sunrise.
