Against Abortion- The Atonement Child
Abortion is a controversial subject in the contemporary society that has resulted into heated debates, with some individuals supporting it whereas others do not support it. Despite the advancement of the medicine field that may be used in committing abortion, there are still a high number of unsafe abortions. Beckwith asserts “Unsafe abortions account for at least 70,000 maternal deaths all over the world” (72). Today, the abortion issue is still a touchy concern for many people in the United States, with pro-life supporters finding the procedure as being unethical in some way. This begs the question, is abortion morally right. Rivers, Francine discusses the issue of abortion in his book The Atonement Child where Dynah, a young Christian college girl studying at a Bible college is raped and gets pregnant, and the reactions from both her family and friends shatters her faith. This makes her fiancé, who is pro-life, to suddenly find abortion acceptable. In addition, her pro-life school tells her that she will face expulsion unless if her pregnancy does not disappear. She is forced to think about their viewpoints, what God says in the Bible, as well as her own shaky pro-life views. Abortion negatively affects the society and killing unborn babies is not only wrong, but morally wrong as well.
