Schizophrenia is a serious brain disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels and acts. Someone with schizophrenia can have difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what is imaginary; can be unresponsive or withdrawn; and can have difficulty expressing common emotions in social situations. Contrary to public perception, schizophrenia is not a split personality or multiple personality. Rather, they are “split off” from reality in which the personality loses its unity. The vast majority of people with schizophrenia are not violent and do not pose a danger to others. It is not caused by childhood experiences, poor parenting, nor are the symptoms identical for each person. Schizophrenia affects men and women equally. It is extremely important for people to understand what causes schizophrenia, what the signs are, and the treatment options available to better assist those who are suffering from this disease.
Initially, the cause of schizophrenia is not fully known. However, scientists believes that it may be caused by the interaction between genetic, environmental, and brain chemistry. Schizophrenia is highly heritable and a person who has an identical twin is more likely to develop the disorder, even when the twins are raised apart (Nimh.nih.gov, 2015). The disease affects about 1 percent of the population and having a history of families with schizophrenia also increases the risks (Nimh.nih.gov, 2015).
