“Is voting a right or a privilege?” That question came to my mind, when I was thinking about human rights. I think it is ethical to say that voting is a right for everyone because everyone should have the right to choose their leaders regardless if you are a felony or not. In the past only rich and powerful people were able to vote, however as of today everyone that lives in the United States that are citizen over the age of 18 now has the right to vote. As Michelle Alexander gives examples in her book The New Jim Crow how African American don 't get to vote due to the color of their skin. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was designed to make the right to vote a reality for all Americans. the Voting Rights Act has made it a big step toward that goal, it has been one of the most effective the right to vote, to free speech, to fair and equal treatment, laws passed by Congress. So voting is a right not a privilege, then why voting is so challenging for African Americans. Why does some states requires for African Americans to take a test prior to voting? I believe that in those states that requires testing prior to voting should provide the African American with some kind of special ID for them to vote. according to, “Civil Rights --- Court Suspends NC Voting Law Provisions” By Debroah Elkins says that right to vote is basic And a tight timeframe before an upcoming election does not reduce that right.
