Islam is the second largest and fastest growing monotheistic religion in the world today. It began in the Arabian Peninsula during the seventh century CE after Allah (God) revealed himself to the final prophet Muhammad. At this time the main religions where polytheistic and many God’s and idols were worshipped. Muslims, the adherents of Islam, believe that the prophet Abraham was the first Muslim because he was the first to believe in a single God. The word Islam means the submission to God and Muslims use the Five Pillars of Islam as a belief framework to live life submitting to Allah’s will, these include The declaration of faith ("There is no deity but God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God"), Prayer (Five obligatory prayers each day to Allah), Zakat (Obligatory charitable giving, a form of "purification" by setting aside a portion (2.5%) for the needy), Fasting (From sunrise to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan) and Hajj (A pilgrimage to Mecca, Arabia at least once in a lifetime if able to). However, Muslims do not only use Islamic beliefs to submit to Allah but also Islamic core ethical teachings.
