Leadership Paper

This paper is written to highlight my perception of leadership; it has its roots in the word of God which is the foundation for all knowledge. As King David wrote in 2 Samuel 23:2-4 “"The Spirit of the LORD spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue. The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me, 'He who rules over men righteously, Who rules in the fear of God, Is as the light of the morning when the sun rises, A morning without clouds, When the tender grass springs out of the earth, Through sunshine after rain,” (2 Samuel 23 2-4 New American Standard Bible). What are the characteristics of an effective leader? Some say that a good leadership is innate, others say that it can be learned. Both ways seem reasonable and can be acquired by anyone. Leadership qualities come in a variety of packages, but I believe for nurses these are the most important. The leader must possess strong communication skills, be honest and open and must be approachable, and maintains confidentiality. He must be fair treating everyone equal. He must possess knowledge about all aspects of the job. Their job role includes “planning, organizing directing and controlling which are essential to the leadership function” (Feltner, Mitchell, Norris, et al., 2008). In addition, the leader should be a role model that sets a good example for other staff. They must be dependable, reliable and consistent. They must be confident when making decisions. They must possess a positive attitude and be able to motivate others. The leader must delegate responsibilities to capable staff members, and be flexible to adapt to change. He must be compassionate and loyal to employees, have an objective and be a navigator. In conclusion a leader is an individual with exceptional people skills. He is able to motivate people and mobilize them in accomplishing a particular goal. Organizations could not achieve their goals without leadership.
