Names and titles have great significance in the Bible. Jesus shall be called our Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). Immanuel was another important title He was given. It means “God with us” (Matthew 1:23). In Mathew 1:20-23 it reads, “...behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not feat to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord has spoken by the prophet: “Behold the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel (which means, God with us).” Immanuel was not the name Jesus was known by on earth, but instead served as a title and description of Jesus’ role as the Messiah as God with us (Nelson, 1992). “Titles are like proper names…Two obvious examples include Lord, used as a circumlocution for the divine name, and Messiah. A role, on the other hand, is more of a job description” (McMahon, 2007).
Many scholars have argued that the meaning of Jesus is “salvation”. However, Jesus has many descriptions of who He is. To say that Jesus would be called “Immanuel” means Jesus is God and lived among us on Earth to save us from our sins.
