One of the oldest controversies within sociology and psychology has been of what determines who we are, whether it be nature or nurture. Nature refers to our heredity and biological makeup while nurture is based on our environments in which we live in. Our physical features can be identified as identical to our parents, like our eye color, hair color, skin color, etc. But, our personality and talents may or may not have come from our parents, but instead from the environment in which we grew up in; our environments have been said to affect our behavioral perspective. Over several decades psychologists have developed countless theories to explain the characteristics of human-beings in how we think, feel, and behave- all eventually leading to the debate of nature vs. nurture. Both clearly play important roles in human development, but we are unclear which we developed majorly from.
The nature theory refers to the belief that hereditary traits found in our genes make us who we are. The coding of genes in each cell in humans determines the different traits that we have that are more dominantly on the physical attributes (Watson 1). For example, our eye color, hair color, skin color, height, and other genetic traits. Our genetics have been proven to play a big role in the development of several mental health conditions as well, such as schizophrenia, bipolar, and depression. For example, those who have a third degree relative with schizophrenia are twice as likely to develop…
