Poliomyelitis, or polio, according to the New York State Department of Health, is “a contagious viral disease which may affect the spinal cord causing muscle weakness and possibly paralysis” (New York State Department of Health). The virus is more common to attack infants and young children living under poor conditions and hygiene. When it does occur to older patients, however, paralysis appears to be a more typical and a quite severe symptom to recur. The polio virus operates by entering the body through the mouth, usually from any contaminated matter; from there, the virus invades the nervous system, and possibly in a matter of hours, the poliovirus can completely disable the victim’s legs, or muscles to breathe and swallow if the virus is severe enough. As terrifying and horrible as it sounds, the last cases of polio in the United States were in 1979 according to the New York State Department of Health, and most of the infection now occurs at areas least sanitized, like Afghanistan, Nigeria, or Pakistan; so with an exception from the contaminated nations of the world, the United States is safe, but it is highly recommended and even required to be vaccinated. There are three types of the poliomyelitis infections that many individuals need to be cautious for: sub-clinical, non-paralytic, and paralytic.
