Obesity Genetics or Nurture
Obesity is a big problem in our world today. Globally there are almost more than 1 billion obese people in the world. The rate of obesity has risen dramatically in the areas of North America, Middle East, China, Australia and the United Kingdom in last 30 years and comprises about 2/3 of world’s total population. The question that arises today if this is an issue of genetics or if it is caused by a person’s unhealthy eating behavior. Obesity causes one to develop life taking diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, risk of strokes, gallbladder disease, cancer, pregnancy issues etc. and is often accompanied by sense of shame and isolation, unemployment and other discrimination in the community which affects people psychologically. The tendency of being obese is found in our environment with lack of physical activities and high calorie low cost food or genetically.
"It 's going up everywhere," says study co-author Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington-Seattle. Further he describes that Obesity is defined as if a person has a body mass index of more than 30kg/sqmeters. Obesity tends to run in families, meaning that it may have a genetic cause. However, family members share not only genes but also diet and lifestyle habits that may contribute to obesity. Dividing these lifestyle factors from genetic ones is often difficult.
