What makes us attracted to certain people more than others? The science of Psychology explains how people become attracted to one another. Certainly some aspects of beauty are cultural; fashion and trends change over time. Also, society and the media influence us into thinking what traits are attractive. Some reasons for attraction have to do with familiarity and proximity. Biology also plays a role in determining what traits we will possess. Biology and Psychology work hand and hand to help us pick our mates.

On covers of magazines we constantly see “ideal” faces and bodies. The people on the covers are really not as they appear; many magazine editors edit the women/men on the cover using Photoshop. Also, some celebrities may have gotten plastic surgery to remove flaws. When people look at magazines, people may have false impressions of attractiveness. This greatly affects our views of beauty.
In this world, being physically attractive can help you socially and economically. Cialdini (1984) has named physical attractiveness an important component of influence. He noted that physically attractive people have an enormous social advantage in our culture; they are better liked, more persuasive, more frequently helped, and seen as possessing better personality traits and intellectual capabilities (Cialdini, 1984). An interesting theory that applies to physical attraction is the reinforcement theory. You may begin to like a person that is physically attractive because it is pleasing to look at that person. It is your own personal reward. The attractive person may also reap the benefits of being attractive, such as assumed intelligence (Batt, Hall, Hendricks, & Olson, 1998).
