When asked nowadays many people say they look up to superstar athletes and celebrities as their role models. The dictionary’s definition of a role model is a person whose behavior, example, or success is or can be emulated by others, especially by younger people. Personally my definition of a role model is someone who sets great examples for others, people looking up to them, and being inspirational. The role models we choose are how we want our lives to look like in the future. We all need role models to motivate and inspire us. Role models can have a positive or negative effect on a person’s life. Now considering this it is important to choose a role model that can be beneficial to our future goal. Choosing a bad role model can affect one’s life in a very negative way. Especially children should have a great worthy role model to look up to because it will help lead them in a successful path as they grow older. Role models play an important role in our society. In our society today many people look up to celebrities and professional athletes. People only see what the media portrays of these athletes and celebrities. Charles Barkley, a famous basketball player, said, “I’m not a role model… Just because I dunk a basketball doesn’t mean I should raise your kids.” This shows that Charles Barkley doesn’t think athletes should be role models just because they have success on the field.
