Introduction This is an exciting time for health care management. Healthcare is changing more rapidly than almost any other field. The field is changing in terms of how and where care is delivered, who is providing those services, and how that care is financed. Health care management requires talented people to manage the changes taking place. In their roles, health care executives have an opportunity to make significant contribution to improving the health of the communities their organizations serve. Finally, Leading, the most important task; is the function that refers to initiating action and motivation of, and communication with, health care subordinates. Health care managers and administrators are increasingly assuming leadership and management responsibilities for multiple units and departments. (Purnell, D, 1999).
Leadership is learned behavior that becomes unconscious and automatic over time. The most successful leaders are instinctual decision makers. Having done it so many times throughout their careers, they become immune to the pressure associated with decision-making and are extremely intuitive about the process of making the most strategic and best decisions.
Successful leaders are great communicators, and this is especially true when it comes to performance expectations. In doing so, they remind their colleagues of the organization’s core values and mission statement, ensuring that their vision is properly translated and actionable objectives are properly executed. “Managers know that productivity through people is an important ingredient for long-term success in today’s demanding, people-intensive health care workplace.” (Lombardi, Schemerhorn, & Kramer, 2007).
Effective leaders create a positive and inspiring workplace culture. They know how to set the tone and bring an attitude that motivates their colleagues to take action. As such, they are likeable, respected and strong willed. They do not allow failures to disrupt momentum. According
