Systems Theory Paper “Those who study systems theory tends to view any system as the result of a dynamic interrelationship between its component parts and its whole. They view the parts as mutually determinate with the whole. Social workers utilizing systems theory view societies and social groups as dynamic systems. They are concerned with bettering the conditions of the individuals who make up such systems.” (Flamand, 2010) Systems theory is used by many social workers. There are numerous goals that a counselor must have when counseling an entire family and if one family member feels as though he or she is not being listened too; the family member may shut down, which will cause a breakdown in the therapy sessions. A counselor in the area of family therapy understands that because a family is a unit, one change or problem affects the whole family dynamic (, 2004-2008). Systems theory is a general theory and it can be used by different type of professionals. For example, “mental health professionals use systems theory as a way of understanding how individuals are both products of and complicit in their personal situations, as well as how these situations tend to affect the people in them.” (Flamand, 2010) They seek to help those clients understand their situation and find healthier ways of coping with the situation. On the other hand, family social workers use systems theory to understand family dynamics and help promote healthy family structures. Family social workers try to understand how the families responsibilities structure work, they determine when the families responsibilities is not functioning accordingly and determine when physical intervention may be necessary to protect a family member of the family. The systems theory of helping can influence a broad range of people’s lives. The systems theory often addresses familial problems. When one
