Diversity can have a lot of different meanings that are contingent upon context of surroundings. Diversity is put simply as a “range of different things”; it can also be defined more specifically in terms of “the inclusion of individuals representing more than one national origin, color, religion, socioeconomic stratum, sexual orientation, etc.” For this class I had to step outside of my comfort zone to edify myself as an educator. Through the experience of a summer music camp and Hindu temple I have acquired perspectives that have impacted me as a teacher permanently. As someone who grew up in the rural towns of Zephyrhills and Lake Alfred, Fl I did not have much more than a simple Southern-Baptist childhood. I was homeschooled until middle school where I ran into almost immediate culture shock. I was overwhelmed by the different people I met but not fazed by their differences. It was a critical time for me as a kid to realize our diverse world that exists even locally. Little did I realize growing up that there is really much more to it than the experience I attained in middle school and high school. I had not felt such an overwhelming feeling since middle school until I took the opportunity to visit the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Tampa, Fl. When I rode to the center with a good friend of mine, we approached what seemed to a be a modern take on a castle like building which had four rectangular pillars, a wall connecting each, accented with terracotta style tiles…
