Writing is done in almost all professions. Whether a person is a police officer or an animator, there is always some writing that must be done. This is especially true for those who wish to become teachers, and therefore have to structure their entire career around the writings they prepare, such as creating lesson plans, handouts, and blog posts.
Although it is obvious that high school English teachers are required to do quite a bit of writing in the classroom, people often forget that there is quite a bit of writing that must be done in preparation for a teacher’s career.
The first step to becoming an English teacher is to enter college and obtain either a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education with an English concentration, or a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with an education concentration.
All professionals looking to teach in English at the high school level in the state of California are required to pass the CBEST (California Basic Educational Skills Test) as well as the CSET (California Subject Examinations for Teachers) exams. The CBEST tests a person’s proficiency in reading, mathematics, and writing while the CSET is a single subject test that tests a person’s competence in English subject matter. These tests feature writing sections similar to those on the SAT and are “designed to measure an examinee’s knowledge and skills in relation to an established standard” (“CTC Exams”) which match up with California Curriculum standards.
