“It is the greatest truth of our age: information is not knowledge” (Carr 2000); yet, search engines such as Google allow people access to an unlimited amount of information. Currently, information is so easily obtained that today’s era is sometimes referred to as the information age (Carr 2000). However, having access to an endless expanse of information has negative affects. For instance, there is an overwhelming number of opinions, misrepresentations, misinterpretations, inaccuracies, fallacies, biases etc. scattered all over the Internet. Additionally, since there is so much information, it is always difficult to determine which sources are trustworthy. Feminism is an topic that suffers from this. Feminism is the ideology that all men and women should have equal rights. Many people have the wrong idea about what feminism represents and the information age plays a main role in this misunderstanding; this is seen on the Internet through laziness and availability bias, false consciousness or false beliefs and their affect on mainstream media and the right for anyone in the Western world to exercise their freedom of speech.
Search engines are used and praised for their convenience and speed; this has led to laziness in terms of research, making the easily available information a factor in the common misunderstandings regarding feminism, this is also known as availability bias.
