In “The Story of an Hour” The reader proceeds through a journey. The journey is the travelling through thoughts and emotions in Mrs. Mallards (Louise) mind. The journey only takes an hour, so the story moves along quickly. Louise seemed to process the news of her husband’s death without an initial element of disbelief and shock; she is quick to accept it. As a reader it makes her appear cold and unloving. She moves right into the reaction of grieving for her spouse. This seems more real to us, as we think of the typical human reaction. She quickly begins to perceive other emotions. At first it is difficult for her to understand them. Louise may be thinking how people will perceive her. The journey is a way that Louise comes to her final thoughts of freedom. She looks into the future and looks forward to living a long life on her own terms. At the end she appears proud and relieved with her discovery.
The beginning of the story sets the theme for the whole story. The reader learns about the heart condition Louise is affected by. This is an important concept throughout the story. The heart condition is a symbolic way of describing her thoughts of oppression that she senses about her marriage. She feels trapped and isolated by the marriage. Louise felt the need to hide these emotions. Women of her era are meant to be home and under their husbands command. The story has her passing through this journey privately.
