Professor Haynes, you have told us some stories that shock me, they went beyond an innocent mistake, they seemed just ignorant and rude. I do not take away from your experiences or any other person’s experiences. In week six the video of the comedian mocking, “reverse racism” belittled my experiences. Not only that but whomever chose that video didn’t seem to consider this could send the wrong message to students in this program that have a negative view or bias towards white people.
Another student told me that I am one of the only white people she has talked to that was accepting of black people’s culture. She said she had no white friends (that’s fine) and didn’t really like white people. I didn’t think she was a racist and I wasn’t offended. I can understand how that can happen, especially if most of the interactions are negative. The problem is no one can be sure if someone in this program hates white people. If there are such people in this program that video isn’t going to help them overcome it.
I have definitely encountered people that hate me, just because I am white, as you know. It went beyond a bias, but I would not go as far as to call them bigots. What did I experience? If it were the other way around, the white person would be a racist. If my experiences would be described as part of them finding their racial identity, I don’t really know how to react to that.
