Values and Ethics
Social work is synonymous with values and ethics. The role of a social work professional divided between two levels of service. The macro level, which strives to create an ideal environment for individuals, and the micro level, that attempts to help individuals in their environment (Van Wormer & Besthorn, 2013). The values and ethics of social work professionals create the framework of the field of social work and it is imperative that the upmost standard is held by this profession. These ethical guidelines have developed over the course of history and were essential to the field as it is known today. This essay will provide the historical evolution of the social work profession and illustrate how historical events shaped the role of social workers today. Next, this essay will explain the key concepts and guidelines used by social work professionals established by, the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) in their Code of Ethics, the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) in their Policies and Standards, and within the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Then this essay will examine challenging ethical issues facing social workers and the social work profession today. Following this, this essay will explore one specific area of practice and discuss what ethical issues practitioners face that are unique to that field of practice.
