What does it mean to be a female? According to the Cambridge Dictionary, a female is someone of the sex that can produce eggs and give birth to young (Cambridge Dictionary). Some parts of society are more specific, stating that females are defined by key characteristics such as having two x chromosomes, enlarged breasts, long hair, and a lack of beards. Females in most societies are supposed to be delicate. They like flowers and wear dresses. Females have also been taught to be subordinate to men. Granted, as times change, so do views.
I am from a particularly conservative family. My grandmother always enforced the idea that men are superior to women. By the time I was 10, I knew how to cook, clean, and even sew, so that one day, I would be the perfect wife. I was encouraged to wear dresses and keep my hair long. I will always remember the day that my grandmother told me that if a man ever told me that the sky was purple, I should agree with him even though I know that the sky is blue. I was also told that I was a rose, that was constantly growing and would one day grow to be a beautiful rose. I had constant lessons on how properly behave and stay quiet and submissive. I was also encouraged to constantly maintain my body as pure as possible from drugs, alcohol, tattoos, piercings, and men.

However, it is 2016 and although my grandmother meant well, I have questioned her definition of what it means to be female. Basically, I have challenged every lesson that my grandmother…
