After a four-year contract was up, MAC began to expand to other retail stores and vigorously began opening industry stores. Estée Lauder Companies acquired a controlling interest in MAC in 1996, and then completed their acquisition of the company in 1998.

Products
MAC provides a wide variety of products for the everyday consumer such as eye shadow, lipstick, lip-gloss, and all types of foundation, concealer, nail polish, stage makeup, and mascara. MAC also sells fragrance, make-up brush, and skin care product.

Facing more and more rivals
The Beauty industry is like a big cake; everyone wants to have a piece of it. There is an increasing amount of cosmetic companies mainly produce heavy cosmetics, cake makeup, and stage makeup which are like MAC products. For example, the existing rivals such as Nars, Make Up Forever, Bobbi Brown, and the new threats such as Tarte, Urban Decay, Too faced and so on; they produce the same cosmetics as MAC, and costumers can easily find substitution instead of MAC products.
In addition, MAC is design for the special make-up purpose; the prices of its products are relatively high, only a few people can purchase them. The cheaper priced beauty brand such like Maybelline, L’Oreal, Amey, they produce quality cosmetic but at an affordable price. Consumers have switching power over the beauty companies such as MAC.
