Attitude is a Learned Behavior

Attitude is a learned behavior that can be changed based on the individuals choice and wiliness to change. The Webster’s New World Dictionary defines attitude in three different ways; first is a bodily posture showing mood or action, second is a manner showing one’s feeling or thoughts and third is one’s disposition. In General Attitudes are the feelings and thoughts you have about yourself and how you interact with other people. Attitude plays apart of everything in society’s life, from taking your first steps, going to high school, choosing a college, getting a job and choosing a mate. How many times has a parent said to their teen “you better change that attitude or I will change it for you!” This meaning that the teen’s attitude is not fitting into the “norms” the parent has set for them. Starting at birth we are taught the normal behaviors and the normal attitudes that we must continue to change in order to met society’s standards of norms. When surveying a group of men and women ranging in ages from 16 to 65, 39 out of 39 stated that they believed that the environment someone is in influences individuals attitudes. As well, although at times it seems very difficult to change, it is necessary to have the right attitude in order to succeed in life and to get that attitude takes hard work and constant change throughout life. Attitude is what make you or break you when you’re trying to achieve your goals in life.
Out of the book A Forest of Voices is an essay wrote by Tom Wolfe entitled O Rotten Gotham. The essay deals with him spending a day watching other New Yorkers and seeing how they deal with everything including each other. He also talks about how people change with the surroundings. He terms this “Behavioral Sink,” which is the study how animals react with their environment. He continues watching the people and sees how they do change with the environment they are in.
