Diabetes: A group of metabolic diseases in which a person has high blood sugar. Diabetes consists of two main types. Type one: a failure to produce insulin, so the carrier has to inject insulin into themselves. Type two: when the body’s cells fail to use insulin properly. Type two is more common of the two types and affects more than ninety percent of the United States population. Does sugar cause diabetes? “Diabetes affects more than twenty million Americans which is 2.8 percent of the population” (Diabetes). Formerly known as juvenile diabetes, type one diabetes is an autoimmune disease that can develop at any age, diagnosed most often in children and young adults. Symptoms of type one often occur at a young age. “People who have type one are at risk for long-term complications, such as damage to: kidneys, eyes, cardiovascular system, nerves, blood cells, and gums.” Increased thirst and urination, constant hunger, weight loss, and blurred vision are some symptoms. Type one can be treated by insulin therapy, self-monitoring of blood glucose, healthy eating, and physical activity. Type one occurs equally between men and women but is more common in whites than non-whites (Schoenstadt).
The most common form of diabetes, type two is a chronic disease marked by high levels of sugar in the blood. When the body does not respond to insulin is when type two occurs. Overweight people are more likely to have insulin resistance because fat interferes with the body’s ability to use insulin (Type 2 Diabetes). “Type two is not caused by genetic factors; people eat themselves into this condition” (McEvoy). Some symptoms include blurred vision, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, frequent or slow- healing infections, increased appetite, increased thirst, and increased urination. “Often, people with type two diabetes have no symptoms at all.”Tests used for type two diabetes: fasting
