The Industrial Revolution brought many changes to the societies that experienced the process of industrialization. Some of the changes benefited society, while others caused harm to most of the society. Most affected by these changes was the working class of these societies. In regards to the working people of the country of England, they experienced a lot of pain caused by industrialization. The gains of the Industrial Revolution in England from 1780 to 1850 were not worth the pain that was caused by it, which primarily affected the working class of England. The workers are clearly being overworked beyond their capabilities. The workers experience long hours of work while having very little food and water. Maria Gooder says, “I go at 4:30 after having porridge for breakfast. I start hurrying at 5. We have dinner at noon. We have dry bread and nothing else. There is water in the pit but we don’t sup it.” The workers suffer horribly every day, but they continue to work for many years. Over time, more laws were enacted in an attempt to protect the workers. Document 5 contains an excerpt of a British child labor law from 1833. It required that children under eighteen years old work up to a certain amount of hours each day and each week. It also restricted the times of day in which a child can work. The law also required some amount schooling for every child in addition to work. It provided some amount of protection for children, but not much. However, to fully examine the conditions of workers throughout the Industrial Revolution, more sources are needed to provide a clear picture of what different workers experienced at work. As laws were passed over time that gave workers more protection, workers may have experienced better working and living conditions towards the end of the Industrial Revolution.
