MDMA was first created in 1910by German scientists studying amphetamines., Merck, a German pharmaceutical company, took out a patent on the chemical in 1914 because they believed that MDMA could be useful for suppressing appetites. MDMA generally comes in the form of a pill which taken with alcohol or water, but can also be crushed and snorted, injected, or inserted anally. When in pill form, MDMA is generally a small and colored pill that is stamped with a logo pertaining to the manufacturer of that batch. The logo and color of a pill can serve as a way to find pills with similar appearances to ones that produce a particularly good experience for a user. MDMA can also be combined with many other substances, taken as part of a multi-drug episode that includes marijuana, cocaine, heroin, LSD, methamphetamine, ketamine, and Viagra. Other drugs commonly taken with MDMA are antidepressants, which counteract the depression of “coming down” after experiencing the resulting high from MDMA. Usage of MDMA generally begins at parties and people are looking for the positive effects. The user begins to feel the rush about 20 minutes after taking the dose which then builds up to a peak high and levels off for 3 to 8 hours before a period of coming down. Users find that MDMA gives them the energy and endurance to dance for the entire night on a high. The high includes feelings of euphoria, openness, comfort, arousal, love, and self-confidence, though long-term repeated use of MDMA lessens the intensity of many of these feelings. To those that appreciate the effect, there are also reports of sharpened senses, mental clarity, feelings of floating, and hallucinations as positive outcomes
