Looking back over the course of the semester, I feel that I learned many new and interesting uses for technology within the classroom – both for classrooms that have a lot of technology and for classrooms that are limited with technology. For the majority of the class, we utilized William Kists’ book The Socially Networked Classroom: Teaching in the New Media Age (2010), which provided multiple modes of instruction that both utilized and/or created technology. One of the first things that I remember, and consequently that stuck with me through the course’s entirety, is that individuals must treat everything as a text. Even a garden is a text. I think that this incorporates all of the wonderful things that a literature circle asks of students while still pushing the boundaries of technology with the blogging and further allowing students to connect to school from their home environments. I also want to incorporate the social action project into my classroom (p. 76). The social action project requires both rigor and relevance, but I believe that it truly represents the types of authentic activity that we, as modern teachers, want in our classrooms. The authenticity of the project allows for students to collaborate through social learning but with an entirely new audience, those of the world wide web. When considering the future of teaching especially with computer applications/media/technology, I really do not see any type of limit to where technology will go from here. In a mere 20-30 years, look already at what scientists and inventors have created to aide and continue to push society. Technology opens up many doors and provides students with more information, a wider audience, and new objectives. On the other hand, technology poses new risks in the classroom as well. Students begin to rely heavily on technology. As a product of the technology age, I know that if there is a math problem or calculation with money at a store, I quickly look to the aid of my calculator.
