For many years, the thought of English being the official language of the United States has come with a little controversy. Some argue that English should be the official language because it is the most dominant language in the world. Some believe by doing so, it would create a stronger unity among the American people. An example of this is if they were the 3 secondary languages taught and over the course of time Hindu replaces Chinese as the 3rd most widely spoken language for a large period of time, then Hindu would then be added to that list of secondary languages taught. This may not be the best method to better embrace diversity and assimilation but I look at many of my friends from Europe. They often times know at least three languages and speak them fluently by the time they graduate college. However, many American know roughly one language and barely speak it fluently.
I think many groups adjust to living in this nation extremely well without learning the language. Often times these individuals have a family member who knows English who can translate for them, usually it is their child who has been raised here. Examples of these communities are Chinatown as well as the Cuban communities in Florida. These communities are self sustaining and thrive very well. The problem here is these communities are not great if the people move beyond their communities’ boundaries. If a Chinese born man were to go to a bank outside of Chinatown he may not get the best help because there may likely be a language barrier or even a possible form of prejudice because he is foreign and a minority. In a way these people can adjust to living in the United States within their own communities but the people of the United States can’t directly adjust to these specific types of communities.
