I registered to take psychology for a different reason, but I never thought it could aid in the improvement certain skills of mine until I was asked to apply what I have learned to my lifestyle. Upon finding out I had to apply a learning principle of psychology to my life, I was not sure of which aspect I could apply to and benefit greatly from it. I pondered greatly about diverse aspects involving sports, fitness, eating habits, socializing and finally study habits. It was then that I realized upon comparing my study habits back when I was in Ghana to my current state, it has gotten extremely awful. However, the operant conditioning which was the change in the happening of a habit due to a consequence could be apply to this habit because it involved reinforcement. Specifically, I could apply the Premack principle to my study habit because it involved using my most desirable habits to reinforce my least occurring habit. According to the Premack principle, I do not perform any of my preferred behaviors like eating, running, socially or the use of my computer until I have performed my least occurring behavior, which was my academic focus. In addition, after I had performed an academic task for a given period of time or in a given chapter of a book, I will take a and perform my most desirable habits.
I begin everyday after all my classes by buying my food and bringing it to my room because I was starving. I then set it within meters away from me. Afterwards, I turn on my computer, bring up my iTunes and facebook profile. With my all these set and right infront of me, I advice myself that I perform non of these tempting and teasing behaviors until I have read this following chapter of done this homework. With the food being a very powerful inforcer, it prompted me focus and perform my academic duties in my stated fixed ratio or interval just so I could have some food in my stomach.
