Introduction. Counselors have large shoes to fill. They not only administer assessments, but are also involved in group counseling, individual counseling, and have to plan and implement comprehensive school guidance programs. A counselor must know and be competent in all realms of their position. School counselors work with all children, including children with disabilities in various settings within the school (Villalba, Latus, Hamilton, & Kendrick (2005 p 449). As stated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), school counseling services must be made available to all students in special education programs as part of their right to a Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) (Bowen & Glenn, 1998; Clark, 1998). A counselor is a valuable tool because they can help the team make decisions for the FBA. School counselors can also help teachers implement a BIP or assist when teachers need clarification. Since counselors do have developmental training and are knowledgeable, they can be a wealth of information for the FBA team and other school administrators or professionals. A strength determined from the article is that all members who are involved in the developmental process of a FBA are responsible for effectively using the BIP, and counselors can serve as the “go to” person if an individual has questions. Another major strength after analyzing this article is that counselors want to learn how to work on the FBA team and learn more about FBA. This is a true sign of drive and willingness to help others. Counselors are in this profession for the students.
Major weaknesses. In my opinion I think the short survey is considered a weakness, but a strength as well because a counselors’ time is limited due to the fact of the multiple roles they play. A weakness of the study falls under collecting a small sample size, a limited response rate and geographic location (Villalba, Latus, Hamilton, & Kendrick (2005 p 453).
