Technology and Social Media in Social Work
Technology and social media is one of the most prominent ways people choose to communicate. The use of landline telephones and letter writing is fading away with the increased use of computers, cellphones, and email in today’s world. Many people have different opinions on the current advancement of technological methods, especially in the workplace. Some feel that it is helpful and makes business more efficient; others feel it is hurting our need to connect face to face and replacing it with more impersonal communications. In the field of social work, where the helping relationship is paramount, the debate of using technology in practice and with clients has no easy answer.

At the agency level, case management programs can generate reports, track personnel, automate billing, forecast budgets, and greatly assist service planning and delivery; global-level consultation and conference abilities are at hand; emerging geographic information systems can pinpoint community assets and needs (p.3).
This statement made by the NASW and ASWB shows the various ways technology can be utilized in social work practice and documentation. Their document of Technology Standards is a great tool to guide social workers in how to appropriately implement technology in practices.
This area makes me think about my own field placement, which is not in a social work agency. I work with an outreach program provided through an organization, and the way they keep track of everything is very dependent on technology. When I first arrived I was given a flash drive, not a book or folder, with past information on the program, intern manuals and agency guidelines. We bring and use our personal laptops for any work we do, and use the social media site DropBox to share files with employees. Google calendar is where we update our work schedules, and Wunderlist
