Genetically modified organisms Genetically modified foods are found in almost every store and are very common in America. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is a very controversial and heated topic in the agricultural industry. Humans first began to genetically alter organisms and crops in the 1990’s and began to be widely used in the early 2000’s. This new technology has scared many uninformed people who fear change and new agricultural techniques. GMO fearing individuals need to realize the benefits of GMO’s; genetically altered crops are the future of agriculture. Genetically altered crops are essential because of today's growing population, safe, cheap technology, and the many examples of successful crops. “The world population …show more content…
The large change and modification of crops and new changes with the food consumed by many makes people question the safety of it. “These fears should quickly be dismissed when examining the extensive testing processes and regulations involving genetically enhanced crops and organisms; most proposed genetic enhancements do not even pass testing and never enter the consumer market. Furthermore these GMO’s only face small genetic modifications and have never been shown to negatively affect the organism or the consumer of the GMO”(Monsanto, n.d.). The minimal use of pesticides could make GMO’s safer than their heavily pesticide treated counterparts. The idea that increased allergens could result from genetically enhancing foods should be repudiated as well; companies like Monsanto have many safeguards to prevent allergens and they avoid common sources of allergens like nuts and eggs (Monsanto, n.d.). Additionally thousands of proteins make up the human diet and only a small fraction of them are the cause of food allergens, consequently the chance of a specific allergen causing protein being used is almost zero. The technology results in greater yield, hence cheaper prices for the consume; GMOs produced can also have a longer shelf life than their traditional cousins(Monsanto, n.d). These cheap, long lasting fruits
