Like many veterans before me, it seems as if time flies by quicker than we expect. Twenty years ago, I felt there was no reason to concern myself with the immediate future because I had decided my career was going to be with the armed forces. The educational requisite to enlist, back then, was a high school diploma or general education diploma. In some cases, one could enlist with a waiver in the absence of either one. I was fortunate enough to have a high school diploma when I enlisted. Therefore, my concern with higher education was non-existent and I felt no obligation to pursue a college degree. If we began using schooling to signify the development and training of the young, and education to signify the learning done by the mature men and women today, according to Adler, the unemployment rate will exceed 10% every year. My sister and her daughter are prime examples in this case. My forty-nine year old sister was employed since high school up until recently; she was laid off three months ago due to cutbacks. She has submitted a resume to fifteen different companies. Out of those fifteen submissions, she was offered two interviews for a position as a reception office manager. At her first interview, the company cited her previous experience and stated she was perfect for the job. However, at her a second interview, the company immediately cited her lack of a college degree and did not hire her. My twenty-two year old niece, on the other hand, possesses this degree. She has recently graduated from college and majored in Criminal Justice. If she were to apply for the same position, without experience, she would be hired on the spot. This is unfortunate for my sister, but great for my niece. The job market has become very competitive these days. Most companies require a degree in order to qualify for a position. Ten years ago, I could have been hired by several companies based on my experience alone. In today’s market, most companies prefer to hire a young adult with a degree to a middle-aged man
